The American Saudade Quarterly
People, Places, History, and the Sea
The American Saudade Quarterly will keep our members, supporters, partners, and friends connected to the continuing work of American Saudade, Inc.

Published four times each year, the newsletter will bring together organizational updates, current events, maritime history, education, culture, people, places, and stories from across the Atlantic world.

Some editions will look back—preserving the experiences of earlier generations of mariners, immigrants, fishermen, veterans, and families. Others will look forward—reporting on the refit of S/V American Saudade, development of the Great Circle Heritage Voyage, educational programs, new partnerships, and future opportunities for participation.

Every edition will reflect ASI’s belief that understanding any subject requires more than a single perspective. Through the philosophy of 360-DEEP™, we will examine the connections among history, geography, culture, economics, technology, politics, the environment, and the people whose decisions shaped events.

What You Will Find Inside

From the Helm
A quarterly message from ASI’s founder and president reflecting on the organization’s progress, challenges, priorities, and direction.

ASI Updates
News from across the organization, including current projects, institutional development, new resources, partnerships, volunteers, fundraising progress, and upcoming initiatives.

S/V American Saudade—The Refit Log
Progress reports from the vessel’s continuing refit, including planning, inspections, equipment decisions, technical challenges, safety considerations, and lessons developed through SubSafe to SailSafe™.
These reports will help readers understand that preparing a vessel for an offshore heritage voyage involves far more than replacing equipment. It requires disciplined planning, documentation, configuration control, testing, training, and a willingness to stop and reevaluate whenever safety requires it.
The Great Circle Heritage Voyage
Updates on voyage planning, potential ports of call, passage preparation, international relationships, weather, navigation, logistics, and the historical connections among Newport, the Azores, Madeira, the Canary Islands,
Cape Verde, and the wider Atlantic.
People and Their Stories
Profiles and interviews featuring mariners, veterans, immigrants, educators, historians, artists, shipyard workers, fishermen, Merchant Mariners, community leaders, volunteers, and families whose lives have been shaped by the sea.
Places of the Atlantic
Each edition may explore an island, port, harbor, village, museum, shipyard, lighthouse, cultural center, or historic maritime route.
These features will examine not only where a place is located, but why it mattered—and how geography, trade, migration, culture, and the sea shaped the people who lived there.
Maritime Heritage and History
Stories from Portuguese, Cape Verdean, Azorean, Madeiran, American, and Atlantic maritime history, including:
-
Exploration and navigation
-
Packet ships and migration
-
Whaling and offshore fishing
-
Merchant Marine service
-
Shipbuilding and boat design
-
Naval and military history
-
Atlantic trade routes
-
Family maritime traditions
-
The age of sail and steam
-
World War II and postwar service
-
The development of modern maritime technology
History will not be presented as a collection of isolated dates. It will be examined through the conditions, choices, human motivations, and competing perspectives surrounding it.
A recurring feature examining a person, place, event, controversy, or current issue through the prism of multiple perspectives.
Rather than looking through only a magnifying glass, 360-DEEP™ asks readers to consider the wider historical, cultural, political, economic, geographic, technological, environmental, and human context.
Education and the Virtual Classroom
Announcements and summaries of ASI lectures, Zoom programs, interviews, debates, classroom discussions, student projects, vessel-based instruction, and collaborative educational programs.
Recordings, study materials, reading recommendations, and related E-Library resources may accompany selected programs.
Current Events—The Maritime Perspective
Analysis of current events affecting the oceans, shipping, naval affairs, ports, fisheries, climate, migration, international trade, maritime safety, and Atlantic communities. These reports will seek to explain rather than sensationalize. Where subjects are disputed, ASI will identify sources, distinguish reporting from opinion, and encourage informed inquiry.
Family Albums and the ASI Archives
Community members will contribute selected photographs, documents, letters, vessel records, family histories, and memories.
Readers will be invited to help identify people, places, vessels, dates, and events captured in historical photographs. These contributions may preserve information that would otherwise disappear.
Partner and Volunteer Spotlight
Recognition of the organizations, institutions, businesses, professionals, and volunteers helping ASI move forward.
The newsletter will show not merely who contributed, but what the collaboration accomplished and why it matters to the mission.
Books, Videos, and Research
Recommended books, articles, documentaries, lectures, websites, archival collections, and educational videos relevant to ASI’s mission.
Materials produced by outside organizations will be clearly attributed to their original creators and shared for educational, research, or discussion purposes.
