Give a Gift—Share a Smile

A Developing ASI Project

Preparing to Carry Kindness Across the Sea

A birthday or holiday gift can create a moment of happiness and remind a child that someone cares.

ASI is exploring Give a Gift—Share a Smile, a proposed program that would work with approved community partners to provide thoughtful, age-appropriate gifts to children experiencing financial hardship or comparable need.

Our initial vision includes communities in Cape Verde and the Azores. The location, scope, and timing of any pilot will depend on the partnerships, resources, and safeguards we can establish.

The program has not launched. This page describes our proposed approach and the prerequisites we must address before accepting program contributions, enrolling recipients, or arranging deliveries.

Thoughtful Preparation Before Participation

Good intentions must be supported by clear responsibilities, reliable partners, sound financial controls, and respect for every child and family involved.

ASI’s development priorities include determining how the program would operate, who would oversee it, how gifts would be purchased and delivered, and how concerns would be handled.

The following areas form our preparation agenda. Their inclusion here does not mean that agreements, approvals, or procedures have already been completed.

Community Partnerships and Local Oversight

Before beginning, ASI must identify and assess potential community partners with the local knowledge and capacity to support the program responsibly.

These may include established educational, cultural, charitable, or community organizations.

Preparations would include:

  • Verifying partner identities, experience, and references

  • Defining responsibilities through written agreements

  • Establishing appropriate supervision and accountability

  • Reviewing potential conflicts of interest

  • Confirming that partners can protect confidential information

  • Creating a process for reporting concerns and ending participation when necessary

No organization or individual will be presented as a confirmed program partner without an agreed role.

Child Safety, Dignity, and Privacy

Protecting children must come before publicity, fundraising, or recognition.

ASI’s proposed approach would keep donors separate from individual recipients. Supporters would contribute through ASI rather than select, contact, or personally deliver gifts to a named child.

Before launch, we must establish procedures covering:

  • Parent or legal guardian consent

  • Appropriate adult supervision

  • Safe delivery and pickup arrangements

  • Limits on collecting and sharing personal information

  • Confidential recordkeeping and access controls

  • Reporting and responding to safeguarding concerns

  • Partner and volunteer conduct

A child would never be required to appear in a photograph, provide a testimonial, communicate with a donor, or publicly express gratitude to receive a gift.

Fair and Respectful Eligibility

ASI will develop written criteria for identifying the children the program is intended to serve.

Selection would be based on defined need and approved local referrals, with safeguards against favoritism, personal connections, or selection for publicity.

We must also determine how partners would document eligibility without collecting unnecessary or intrusive information about a family’s circumstances.

Participation should preserve dignity and avoid embarrassment.

Financial Readiness and Accountability

Before accepting contributions for this project, ASI must establish the financial arrangements needed to manage and account for program funds.

Preparations include:

  • ASI-controlled banking and payment arrangements

  • A realistic pilot budget and spending limits

  • Purchase approvals and separation of responsibilities

  • Receipts, invoices, and payment records

  • Exchange-rate and transaction-cost considerations

  • Procedures for unused funds, failed deliveries, and refunds

  • Clear donor language and program reporting

ASI would retain responsibility for allocating contributions within the approved charitable purpose. Any options for supporting a particular region or gift category would need to be clearly defined before fundraising begins.

Appropriate Gifts and Responsible Purchasing

The proposed program would favor purchasing gifts locally when practical. This could support community businesses, simplify delivery, and reduce shipping and customs complications.

Before proceeding, ASI must assess participating shops, pricing, product quality, and documentation.

Gift-selection guidelines would address:

  • Age appropriateness and product safety

  • Family preferences and local traditions

  • Accessibility and allergy considerations

  • Fair spending limits

  • Returns, substitutions, and unavailable items

  • Restrictions on unsuitable products

  • Whether certain categories, such as electronics or gift cards, should be excluded from the initial pilot

Gifts would carry no religious, political, commercial, or promotional obligation.

Legal, Insurance, and Governance Review

ASI will determine the approvals and professional reviews appropriate to the proposed program before it begins.

This preparation would include board review, applicable fundraising and financial requirements, insurance needs, partner agreements, and the responsibilities associated with operating across national borders.

Child protection, privacy, purchasing, and recordkeeping requirements must be assessed for each proposed location.

A launch date will depend on readiness—not simply enthusiasm.

Confirmation Without Exploitation

Supporters should be able to understand what their contributions accomplish without receiving private information about children.

ASI’s proposed reporting would emphasize receipts, partner confirmations, and combined program totals, such as gifts delivered, regions served, and expenditures.

Identifying photographs and personal hardship stories would not be necessary to demonstrate delivery. Any proposed use of a child’s image would require a separate consent and safeguarding review.

Start Small. Review Carefully. Grow Responsibly.

If the prerequisites are met, ASI intends to begin with a limited pilot rather than a broad campaign.

The pilot’s location, duration, and number of participants remain to be determined. It would test partner reliability, purchasing controls, safe delivery, privacy protections, accounting, and family feedback.

Expansion would follow an assessment of what worked, what needs improvement, and whether ASI has the capacity to continue responsibly. Participation would not imply a promise of ongoing assistance.

How You Can Help During Development

At this stage, ASI welcomes expressions of interest from people and organizations with relevant experience in:

  • Child safeguarding and community programs

  • Local partnerships in Cape Verde or the Azores

  • Nonprofit accounting and governance

  • Legal and insurance review

  • Translation and culturally appropriate communication

  • Responsible retail purchasing and local fulfillment

  • Program evaluation and volunteer coordination

Please contact ASI with your qualifications, ideas, or a potential organizational introduction.

Please do not send children’s names, photographs, addresses, financial circumstances, or other sensitive information. We are not accepting recipient referrals or gift requests at this stage.

ACTA NON VERBA

Deeds, Not Words.

For a program involving children, meaningful action begins with careful preparation.

Give a Gift—Share a Smile is a hope we intend to develop responsibly—with trustworthy relationships, clear procedures, and the capacity to follow through.

One thoughtful gift. A moment of happiness. A program built with care.
